Gender inequality refers to the differences in opportunities and rights between women and men. This issue has been discussed in Turkey for a long time and is actually frequently encountered in daily life. In my opinion, this inequality manifests itself not only in major issues but also in seemingly small behaviors.
First of all, if we look at education, it is true that there has been great progress compared to the past. Now, the school enrollment rate for girls is higher. However, especially in some regions, the education of boys is considered more important. This can lead to girls leaving school at an early age. I think this is one of the most fundamental points where inequality begins.
A similar situation exists in the workplace. Women’s participation in the workforce is lower than that of men. Working women sometimes receive lower wages even for doing the same job. There is also a phenomenon called the “glass ceiling.” That is, women can rise to a certain level, but they have difficulty reaching top management positions. This is actually like an invisible barrier.
Another important issue is roles within the home. In Turkey, housework and childcare are often seen as the responsibility of women. Even working women may have to shoulder these responsibilities when they come home. This creates an extra burden for women. In my opinion, men need to take more responsibility in this regard.
The media is also one of the factors affecting this inequality. In TV series or advertisements, women are generally shown within certain stereotypes. This causes certain ideas to become ingrained in people’s subconscious. Individuals who see such examples from a young age may accept these roles as normal.
I think awareness on this issue has increased in recent years. This topic is being brought up more in social media, news, and various campaigns. There are many people who advocate for women’s rights, and this is an important step towards change.
In conclusion, gender inequality is still an ongoing problem. But it is not something that cannot be completely solved. Through education, awareness, and a change in people’s perspectives, a more equal society may be possible over time.
