In fact, it has been noticed for a long time. Sometimes, even if we do not realize it, we can find ourselves in this situation. In Türkiye, this issue continues as an important problem.

When gender inequality is mentioned, it is understood as assigning different roles to women and men. Women and men are placed into specific patterns because of their gender. For example, girls are raised differently in society; it is thought that they should be calmer and stay at home with their mothers. It is adopted that men, on the other hand, should be freer. Since this situation is adopted from a young age, it has become a habit and settled into life.

In Türkiye, it manifests itself especially in the fields of work and education. In the past, girls were treated more strictly and were not even sent to school. After reaching a certain age, they were married off. Although this situation has eased slightly today, equality has still not been achieved everywhere.

Finding a place in professional life can still be difficult for women. Especially between women and men doing the same job, a wage gap exists. Furthermore, it is more difficult for women to reach managerial positions compared to men. This situation can sometimes occur without even being noticed. Even if efforts are made to overcome this, invisible barriers known as the “glass ceiling” persist.

At the same time, a similar situation exists in domestic life. Generally, housework and childcare are considered invisible labor that women must perform. This is because no wage is paid for these tasks, and most of the time, they are not even appreciated. They are forced to work a “double shift”. The fact that men think it is mandatory for women to do these tasks also supports this situation. This causes women to become more tired at work and at home. Although this situation is often accepted as normal, it is actually a great inequality.

Another issue is society’s expectations of women and men. It is thought that men should be strong, not show their emotions, and provide financial support for their families. Women, on the other hand, are expected to be more understanding and self-sacrificing. Therefore, women and men may find it difficult to behave as they wish. This [equality] means that men also break free from these rigid roles.

Today, the issue of gender has gained importance as one that concerns the welfare not just of women but of society as a whole. Although this situation has actually been noticed for a long time, sometimes, because of our habits, we may not be able to see how much we fall into this inequality. In Türkiye, this issue remains a dynamic problem due to cultural codes and established habits.

Inequality not only restricts women; it also creates a heavy pressure on men. The obligation imposed on men by society to be the “sole breadwinner of the family” and “not to show emotions” creates serious stress for men. A man whose expression of feelings is seen as a “weakness” can distance himself from himself under social pressure. Therefore, gender equality means that men also break free from these rigid roles.

For this inequality to decrease, people must first become aware of these issues. Education plays a very important role in this regard. The understanding of equality needs to be taught from a young age. In my opinion, if more opportunities are given to women in professional life and if people evaluate individuals not by gender but by the work they do, a fairer society can be formed. Change must be ensured in every field, from the stereotyped roles in textbooks to the sexist language in the media.

As a result, gender inequality is an important problem that affects not only women but the entire society. Even small changes can create big differences over time. For this reason, it is very important for people to be more conscious of this issue and to warn one another. Equality concerns not just one segment but the whole society.

Gender inequality has gained more importance today.
