The Future of the Family in Türkiye

The family has been one of the most important building blocks of society from the past to the present. But have we ever thought: where is the institution of the family evolving in Türkiye, and how will this change shape our future?

Social Dynamics and the Changing Role of Women
When we look from the past to the present, it is clearly seen that the institution of the family has not remained constant. Especially in Türkiye, a rapid transition is being experienced from the traditional extended family structure to the nuclear family structure. While in the past multiple generations lived together under the same roof, today individuals prefer a more independent lifestyle. At this point, our main question is: is this a dissolution or a transformation?

Today, women’s active participation in education and working life, the increase in the age of marriage, and the growing importance of individual freedoms directly affect the family structure. In this new structure, the role of women within the family has transformed from a self-sacrificing figure into a conscious partner who is aware of her own rights and freedoms. Social expectations have also changed in this direction, and have begun to see women’s individual success and happiness as an inseparable part of family well-being.

Happiness-Oriented Relationships and Economic Independence
People no longer choose to marry only for the sake of being married, but also to establish a happy and satisfying relationship. This change also explains, to some extent, the increase in divorce rates. While in the past unhappy relationships were maintained with the mentality of “what happens in the family stays in the family,” today individuals prefer to value themselves and, instead of maintaining and trying to fix relationships in which they are unhappy, choose to end them. Although this situation is interpreted by some groups as a weakening of the family institution, it actually shows that individuals’ quality of life and the importance they give to their own identity have increased.

Compared to the past, the increase in women’s participation in the workforce has led to significant changes in the family structure. Women who have gained economic independence are no longer obliged to be financially dependent on their spouses in order to sustain their lives. This situation contributes to making the balance of power in marriages more equal. At the same time, it enables individuals to make decisions more easily to end marriages in which they are unhappy. Therefore, the increase in divorce rates can also be evaluated as individuals having more say over their own lives. For this reason, it would be more accurate to evaluate changes in the family structure not as a dissolution, but as a part of a healthy social transformation.

Family Communication in the Digital Age
In addition to individual transformation, the development of technology and the digital age also significantly affect family relationships. Today, even individuals living in the same house spend most of their time not engaging in face-to-face communication or participating in activities together, but rather using digital devices such as phones, tablets, computers, and televisions. Although this situation may seem to weaken family communication at times, it actually brings new forms of communication with it. Now, even if family members are in different environments or even different cities, they can maintain their communication thanks to digital tools. From this perspective, it cannot be denied that digitalization has not only negative aspects, but also positive aspects that make family bonds independent of time and space.

As a result, we can say that the family structure in Türkiye is not collapsing; on the contrary, it is being reshaped according to the requirements of the modern world. The families of the future are candidates to become a more democratic structure based not on obligations, but on love and mutual respect.

The family has been one of the most important building blocks of society from the past to

[1
6529,6668,6278,6400

post-7687","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ot","tag-elifnur-baran","tag-future-of-the-family-in-turkiye","tag-trend-blogs","tag-trend-topics
["GET
