However, today’s youth in Turkey approach this institution from a
much more rational, selective, and “self-oriented” perspective. Specifically, the rise in
educational attainment and the strengthening of women’s socio-economic status have
transformed marriage from a “necessity” into a challenging “choice.” This paper analyzes this
shifting perspective within the framework of economic independence, individual freedom,
and career orientation.

Women’s Economic Independence and the Changing Dynamics of
Dependency
As the number of educated individuals increases, the fact that women have gained their own
financial power has radically shaken traditional marriage dynamics.

From Dependency to Partnership: While marriage was once an “economic shelter”
for women, it has now been replaced by a quest for partnership based on equal status.
As women realize their potential and gain financial freedom, their traditional
dependence on men has diminished; this has brought about a more questioning attitude
toward marriage decisions.

Demographic Impact: This situation has affected not only marriage rates but also
fertility preferences. Women prioritize their career goals and personal living standards
over the traditional “biological clock.”

From a Culture of “We” to “Self-Oriented” Individuality
The collective family consciousness in our social structure is rapidly being replaced by an
individualistic approach.

Career and Personal Development: While older generations built family-oriented
lives, today’s youth prioritize the “self-actualization” process over marriage. Climbing
career ladders and constructing an individual identity are seen as far more attractive
than assuming domestic responsibilities at an early age.

Increased Selectivity: As education levels rise, partner selection has become a
meticulous process of “sifting through the fine details.” Rapid marriages arranged
through family networks have been replaced by intellectual compatibility, shared
vision, and long-term dating periods.

Freedom Anxiety: Perceptions of Responsibility and Constraint
At the root of the distant stance young people take toward marriage lies a clear fear of
“constraint.”

The Burden of Responsibility: Within the intense pace of modern life, marriage is
perceived as a “bundle of extra responsibilities,” such as household management,
childcare, and extended family relations.

Demand for Autonomy: Young people tend to view marriage as a structure that
restricts personal freedoms and narrows their social mobility. Consequently,
individuals who wish to maintain full control over their own lives approach the
institution of marriage with skepticism.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the expectations of young people regarding marriage in Turkey have drifted
away from traditional norms toward a foundation of individual benefit and freedom. The
awareness provided by education has made individuals more selective, and career goals have
superseded the ideal of starting a family. Particularly, the strengthening of women in the
economic and social spheres has turned marriage from a “necessity” into an institution that is
only accepted when it serves personal happiness. This new “self-oriented” lifestyle is the
clearest indicator that the family structure of the future will be built on a much more flexible
model that respects individual spaces.

Thornton, A., & Philipov, D.
