Today, young people in Turkey have very different perspectives on marriage compared to the past. In earlier times, marriage was often seen as something that had to be done at a certain age. However, young people now approach this topic more consciously and thoughtfully. In my opinion, one of the main reasons for this change is both the increasing economic difficulties and the fact that people now care more about their own happiness.
First of all, one of the most important expectations for young people in marriage is being able to get along well. It is no longer just about living in the same house, but about truly understanding each other. From what I observe, young people today want to be genuinely happy rather than just “getting by” in a relationship. Therefore, being able to communicate well, listen to each other, and show empathy are considered very important in marriage. Solving small problems before they grow into bigger ones is also seen as an important factor for a healthy marriage.
Another important issue is the economic situation. Since living conditions in Turkey are becoming more difficult day by day, many young people postpone marriage. This is because marriage is not only an emotional decision but also a financial responsibility. When expenses such as rent, bills, and wedding costs are considered, it is quite normal for young people not to want to marry before feeling financially ready. In fact, for some young people, finding a job and achieving financial stability has become more important than getting married.
In addition, the concept of freedom is very important for young people. In the past, it was believed that personal space decreased significantly after marriage. However, today, young people do not want their lives to completely change after getting married. Many people want to spend time with their friends, continue their hobbies, and maintain their personal space. I think this can actually help build healthier relationships because people are happier when they can remain themselves.
There have also been significant changes in social roles. Especially with the increase in women’s education levels and their active participation in the workforce, the idea of sharing responsibilities in marriage has become more important. While housework used to be seen mostly as a woman’s responsibility, many young couples now believe that these tasks should be shared. Similarly, men are also expected to take on more responsibilities at home.
Love is still an important part of marriage, but it is no longer seen as sufficient on its own. Young people now consider whether they are truly compatible with their partner rather than marrying just because they are in love. Values such as trust, loyalty, and respect have become just as important as love. This is because these values are believed to be more crucial for a long-lasting marriage.
Finally, social media can also be said to have an impact on these expectations. Since people constantly see other relationships, they may start to question their own. Although this can sometimes have negative effects, it can also help people better understand what they want.
In conclusion, young people’s expectations from marriage in Turkey are now more realistic and conscious. They want to make decisions based on their own happiness rather than just social expectations. This may help build stronger and more solid marriages in the future.
