The family is the cornerstone of society. So, why is the family so important and why does it
constitute the building block of society? The institution of family is the one where the
individual is born, where traditions are learned, where one is prepared for social life, and
where the first education is received. When “family” was mentioned, concepts such as large
crowds, everyone living together in unity, happiness, peace, and security used to come to
mind. However, today, these concepts feel quite foreign to us. Now, hearing the term family
also brings to mind situations like individualization, fragmented family structures, and the
weakening of intra-familial bonds. These changes directly affect not only the family structure
but also the general structure of society and the processes of cultural transmission.
Significant changes have occurred in the family structure in Turkey from the past to the
present. In the past, when family was mentioned, it brought to mind an extended family
structure with many children living together with family elders. However, it would not be
accurate to say that the family structure of the past was completely perfect. During those
periods, the family was an institution where men were authoritarian, roles were sharply
divided, women did not have much of a say, and household income was managed by a single
person. The past family structure has evolved into today’s structure due to these negative
aspects as well as urbanization, industry, and changing economic conditions.
Today, the family structure has changed significantly. Despite this, it is still possible to see
the traditional family structure in some regions of our country. While some circles evaluate
this situation positively, others argue that this structure needs to change. Regarding today’s
family structure, it differs from the past in many aspects; these differences sometimes
manifest in a positive way and sometimes in a negative way.In the new family structure, it is
observed that individualization has increased, individuals live more independently, roles
within the family are shared equally, and men and women have reached a more equal
position. Additionally, the prioritization of education and changes in communication styles
are among the important elements transforming the family structure.Just as there were
deficiencies in the old family structure, the new family structure has many shortcomings as
well. The new family structure has led to the isolation of individuals, an increase in
psychological problems, disruptions in communication with elders due to the weakening of
the family structure, and faster occurrences of divorce.
Many factors are influential in the change of the family institution and the shaping of its
future. These factors can be examined under different headings, namely economic, social, and
technological.Economic factors are among the most significant elements directly affecting
family structure. The hardening of subsistence conditions increases the participation of family
members in professional life, and this situation changes the distribution of roles within the
family. In particular, the participation of women in the workforce plays an important role in
the transformation of the traditional family structure.Social factors also have an impact on the
family structure. The rising level of education causes individuals to make more conscious and
independent decisions. In addition to this, the increase in individualization can lead to the
weakening of family ties.Technological developments significantly affect intra-family
communication. Although social media and digital communication tools facilitate
communication between individuals, they can lead to a decrease in face-to-face
communication. This situation can result in the weakening of emotional bonds within the
family.
In conclusion, many changes have occurred in the family structure from the past to the
present. These changes will continue in the future because the economic, social, and
technological factors that cause this transformation are constantly evolving. The transition
period from a traditional family structure to a modern one has brought about some positive
developments, while also causing certain problems to arise. The future of the family structure
depends on how these factors change and how this process is managed. Strengthening intra-
family communication and the fair sharing of responsibilities contribute to establishing the
family structure on a much more solid foundation.
